Jones 3rd hour At first it talks about Miguel at juvi, however, it doesnt go into any deatail as to how he got their. Soon after a little brawl with his fellow prision mate he's sent off to a group home and is already makeing trouble. "took me less than a day to get into a damn fight". He ends up fighting with a kid named Mong, "A shaved-head Chinese kid with these nasty-looking scars on his cheeks. Now after they broke up the fight, i can tell already that they were going to fiht agian and some one may not be their to save Miguel.
While you believed that Mong and Miguel were going to scrap again, I find it ironic that Mong is actually the one who asks Miguel to escape with him. And when they do escape, the first brawl is between Rondell and Miguel. Miguel screams, "You almost choked my ass to death!" (pg 79) after Rondell releases his grip. Although there is potential that Mong and Miguel will fight again, I think that for now, all they have is each other.
Tyler Smith Jones 3rd hour The setting of this novel takes place in a group home because the main character Miguel got into trouble but the book hasn't told us what he did yet. Also the book doesn't say what time period this book takes place in but i would think it takes place in present time because of the slang that the characters use like "i almost lost it yo" only kids from these days would say that. the setting is important because it helps us understand whats going on in the characters life. for example the setting of a group home shows us the Miguel got in trouble. The only main character in the book so far is Miguel and all i know about him is that he is Mexican, smart, and gets into trouble.
I really like that you mentioned that Miguel is smart. I forgot to mention that myself. It tells us how Miguel's goal in the group home was to read every book on the shelf before he got out. He really likes to read, although he tries to hide it most of the time. He says he feels like hes living a different life in the story, he can forget about being in the group home, I can relate to this.
In We Were Here, the setting takes place in a group home or a place they call the "Lighthouse." Miguel is, so far, the only main character. At this point, he is very ashamed of what he did, or so it seems. He never directly states what he did to get into the group home, instead he says, "It's 'cause of what I did" and avoids detail. When all of the Juvi kids talk about him, they say he's a bike thief. Miguel said, "Most times I don't say anything back, though. Know why? 'Cause on the DL sometimes I pretend it's true myself. I stole a bike..... That's all I did." Miguel is a darkish skinned Mexican with blue eyes; he looks up to his big brother, Diego. I think the setting is so important because it explains how deep Miguel is in. The atmosphere created by the setting describes Miguel's attitude towards his life, others and his actions.

For all the post about not knowing what Miguel did to get in trouble i still don't know what he did but if i had to guess i would say it has something to do with Diego because he talks about him all the time and he said "I don't like feeling bad about anything Diego related" (pg 90) which i think shows guilt. Anyone have thoughts about this? 2. I would also agree that the setting of this story describes Miguel attitude towards life manly because of the tone he uses to describe everything around him there is defiantly a lot of voice in this book.
Tyler Smith 3rd hour An internal conflict that Miguel is going through is a fight against himself. He thinks that sense he's gone to the group home that he doesn't care what happens in his life "especially when the people you're talking to have nothing to lose" and him having nothing to lose shows that he doesn't care anymore. I think later in the book he'll start caring about his life again. I think that this book has a gloomy tone.
An external conflict would be Mong's illness. It is directly stated that he has bad kidneys and needs a transplant, but he's at the bottom of the waiting list. Also, every time he is active, he has to stop to throw up. I think that once they make it to Mexico, Miguel will donate his Kidney, because I feel like him and Mong are growing closer and closer on the journey. I would say the tone of this book is distrusting. Miguel believes Mong is a psycho and thinks he's going to "stab me in the back on some beach in Mexico." Miguel says, "Once we get to Mexico, we'll probably go our separate ways."
I dont think Mong will make it to Mexico, like you said his kidneys aren't well and every time he gets active he has to stop to throw up. If that police guy back at the home isn't taking him to get chacked out any more and after everything that has happened so far, I'm not sure how much longer they can last. I think that Mong knows he's not going to make it so he just trying to ride this thing out as long as he can.
Tyler Smith I also thought that Mong wasn't going to make it to Mexico i didn't thing that he would of committed suicide like that but the kind of foreshadowed it by saying in his record he had "suicidal tendencies"
Even though Mong committed sucide, he told Miguel the night before that he was "in love with the ocean." That really foreshadowed his "Swim." It also makes the ocean a big symbol for Mong's happiness, I think. I myself did not see this coming though. I thought Mong was going to be the leader the whole way to Mexico. I wonder how the group home is going to handle Miguel's phone call back.
Garrett Bass 3rd hour An internal conflict that Rondell is dealing with is Mongs good bye. It was a shock to me and he is confused about what is going to happen next. Rondell is woried that Miguel will leave him "If you gonna leave me then just say it". i think that the two of them are going to stay together threw thick and thin. The tone is questioning.
Tyler Smith I agree with this i think that Miguel is starting to become better friends with Rondell a sense Mong died i thing that the 2 of them will want to stick together also in real life its hard to pick up and just move without knowing anybody.
I hope that Rodell and Miguel stick together, because at the border, Miguel isn't ready but Rondell ask, "Is it okay if I still go, Mexico? This makes me think that they are going to split up But I hope for the opposite because I don't know if Rondell can make it on his own in Mexio.

I thought they would make it at first but after what happened after the party and on the farm I knew it wasn't going to end that way. I think that this book was chossen as a recipient of the Gateway Book Awards because it is a story about three unlikely guys, each with their own problems, who become the best of friends.

I think that the book got the gateway award because its easy to read and follow along with also the book has a lot of slang that teens would understand.

I think the theme of this novel is everyone has a purpose in life. The quote that made me think this is "But while we were here we were more than just what some file could say." This quote explained the theme because it shows the main character saying that he has a reason for being alive. overall i thought this was a great book because of all the voice the characters had it seemed like they were real people.
