I really thought I wouldn't care much for this book just because it reminded me so much of the thing we carry which I did not really like, but I realized I've read a book by this author and her style of writing makes me forget the subject im reading.

i felt the same for this book. it started off really boring but after matt duffy started to talk a little more about what happened to him and more characters were introduced into the book, it sped up a lot. this is my first time reading a book from this author but i am enjoying it.

the novel takes place at a military hospital in Iraq (a.k.a. the green zone)
the setting is important because its telling what had happened to lead up to Matt being in the hospital. Matt Duffy- Directly: has TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) he has a black eye and fat lip from the RPG accident. Justin: directly- Matt's best bud, does a word of the day thing. indirectly: gets hyped up after firefights. Ali: directly- Iraq boy, skinny and bloated. Indirectly: really good at soccer, and persistent.

purple heart takes place in an unusual setting. ""he was in a long, narrow room with two rows of metal beds" (page 1). it takes place in the "green zone" which is a compound that they took over in iraq and turned it into a hospital. the setting is important because right away you know that something bad has happened to matt duffy. one of the main characters is matt duffy, he is a u.s. soldier in the army. another character is justin, he is also a soldier and carried matt out of the situation that got him into the hospital. another minor character is ali, he is an iraq boy that matt use to give candy too.

  6. 18-year old soldier Matt Duffy wakes up in an army hospital in Baghdad. His memories of the events leading up to his hospitalization are spotty at best, he is suffering from TBI - traumatic brain injury. The setting is very critical because this would have never happened had he not been at war. Now the main character is Private Matt Duffy. So far we know that Matt is a young soldier who just got out of high school and joined the army. We can infer that he is kind-hearted and loving because he gave money for his sister to go to college. " When Matt came home from the recruiter's office... he said now she'd have college money for Lizzy, and she cried even harder" (McCormick 26). Another main character is Justin. A young soldier who wears glasses and has a thin, angular face. We can infer that he is caring because he came up to the hospital to see Matt.

i agree with you, that the setting is important to the story. especially when matt goes from the hospital to sadr city. being back in sadr city helps him to remember what happened to himself and ali. it helped certain sounds trigger for matt. "the voice of the muezzin, high and quavering, echoed in the air." (mccormick 165) it reminds him of what happened to him.

An internal conflict that Matt Duffy the main character is struggling with is hes afraid to go back to his unit and leave the calm of the hospital. "Afraid of leaving the calm, orderly word of the hospital. Afraid that he'd be overwhelmed by the chaos of the streets, Afraid of being afraid" (McCormick 126). The conflict will be resolved by Matt being back with his unit and his buddies watching his back, treating him the same before the accident, and Matt finding out what truly had happened when he had got hurt from the RPG. The mood/tone of the novel that the author has created is bitter, cynical, depressing, pessimistic and optimistic

i have to disagree with you about how matt was treated when he went back to his unit. i think that they treated him differently. before he got injured his scouting partner was justin, now that hes back his partner is charlene. matt and justin were very close. one of the things they liked todo was play halo. when matt asked him to play he said no with the excuse that "im not that into halo anymore" (mccormick 139).

i honestly did enjoy reading purple heart. it did start off slow and i was waiting for him to leave the hospital, or for them to give some more information about what happened. when i got about half way through the book it started to pick up. "When Matt walked in, the guys were sitting around watching Rambo: First Blood Part II on Justin's DVD player. i was satisfied with the ending but not extremely satisfied. yes it was an appropriate ending for a book about war. i think this book was chosen because it is probably an everyday thing in war, and it relates to now a day things in the army, we are just not told about. i thought the book explained a lot of things matt went through and i would recommend it to someone that is in the military or someone that just wants a good book to sit down and read. it is a good book because there is some mystery and some suspense and the character is played very well, it felt like i was in the army right next to matt.

i honestly enjoyed this book so far it did start off really slow but i kept with it their is a lot of bad word and stuff but i don't mind its really easy read. it all starts off where Matt Duffy wakes up in a hospital with TBI traumatic brain injury. he was on the business end of a rpg and the explosive rattled his brain that's how he got tbi but he has to sped as much time as he can in the hospital till he can member he keeps a notebook with him at the end of his bed to write down the little pieces he remember because he has to take a tst before he can go back to his squad.

I love the book. The setting starts of slow as it sort of repeats the same process; the main character, Pvt. Matt Duffy who goes into combat and nearly gets hit by an enemy RPG woke up confused in a hospital bed somewhere in the green zone, as he suffers from a minor case of TBI tries to figure out what happened that caused him to end up out of combat, then before he goes into combat he is to talk to an officer to make a report about what happened . The book picks up as the book goes on and Pvt. Duffy returns with Justin and the rest of the squad. Justin, his best friend in the squad starts acting different once he returns to the squad. Wolf and Charlene are acting just as they were before, but Pvt. Duffy still believes he's missing something.

I loved this book. That's coming from someone who doesn't read, and doesn't like reading. This means this book is a must read. This book is about Private Matt Duffy. He wakes up in a hospital in the green zone. That means no one there can be harmed. He finds out that he has been awarded the Purple Heart,
and has no idea why. He then figures out that he has a Traumatic Brain Injury, or TBI. He tries to figure out what happened to him. He has forgotten almost everything but his squad mates. Justin. He's the one who told him what happened to Matt. Wolf, and Charlene. Read this book to find out what has happened to him, and what he is going to do.

At the start of the book Private Duffy wake sup in a hospital for war patients. That same hospital just so happens to be where Saddam Hussein had a building set up. I think that this setting will impact the book because he will go through a lot of hard times in the hospital. Private Duffy's comrade Justin was there when he woke up but told him a story that might not be true. Matt is starting to recover from his TBI from an RPG. As he is recovering he starts remembering and starts to find out what exactly happened to him. Also he keeps observing all the girls in the hospital and says how hot they are, but the only girl he wishes he had was Caroline. This is a very interesting book that I think everyone would like.

I’ve only read about 50 pages into this book and I am already sure that it is going to be a very good book. I don’t read very often but this is most likely a book that I would read again just for fun. The setting of my novel, “Purple Heart”, starts out in an infirmary where 19 year old Matt Duffy wakes up confused and sore. He was in Bagdad in Iraq fighting alongside the rest of his squad when he ended up “on the business end of an RPG” and suffered a TBI, a traumatic brain injury. He is having trouble remembering any details from the day that sent him to the infirmary. The setting is important because it has many other characters injured in the infirmary. The main character in this novel is Matt Duffy, a soldier who is kind and funny. Matt’s best friend is Justin, another soldier who is alongside Matt through thick and thin.

I am loving this book so far. The setting starts off kind of weird. The book start off with the main character Private Matt Duffy waking up in a nursing ward in the Green Zone in Baghdad. The Green Zone is basically a safe place for wounded soldiers to get full recovery. He was fighting in a war in Iraq when all of a sudden he woke up in the nursing ward with no clue what happened and did not have no type of memory. While he is at this ward he realizes that he has been awarded the Purple Heart. When he finally gets of this daze he wakes up to a preacher names Father Brennan. Father is sitting on the side of Matt's bed praying for him. Moments later Doctor J. Kwong. MD walks up to Matt's bed asking him simple questions and writing things on his report. Matt finally asks what is wrong with him and the doctor tell him that he has a Traumatic Brain Injury or some people call it TBI. It has been a day since he has been in the hospital and one of squad members Justin comes to check on him. Matt asks Justin what happened and Justin tells him everything about how he even got to this place. In my opinion I feel like Matt is going to eventually get well and go back into combat. You will just have to read the book to see what happens next.

Matt has forgoten everything that heppened the day he was injured by the RPG. His best friend Justin came and vistied and told him what happened and why he was in the hospital. But one question still fazed matt, why he got a purple heart. Among the army cominity a purple heart means that you did somthing super brave. But matt cant remeber what he did to get the purple heart so he feels as if he shouldn't desever it.

this book is about private Matt Duffy who woke up in a hospital with a tramatic brain injury. He was very confused when he woke up and had no idea where he was, or why he was there. The thing that put him in the hospital was an RPG that was fired at him, when he was fighting in the war. Matt's friend had come to visit him and told him he earned a purple heart, but Matt had no idea what that was. There had to have been a reason why he received it but he cant remember what he did.

The setting is at Baghdad. Matt got a brain injury from an explosion. Matt woke up in the hospital and didn’t remember much. Matt’s best friend Justin came to visit him. Matt was confused as to why he had gotten a purple heart. This lady keeps asking him a bunch of questions and he thinks its confidential but she tells other people. The only thing he really remembers is his squads names in Iraq. Matt wants to get back out there as soon as possible but they wanted to send him to Germany to recover but he refused to do so.

The book purple heart is really interesting from what I have read so far.The setting is about an American soldier who is involved in a firefight and gets hurt and wakes up in a hospital finding out he has TBI-Traumatic Brain Injury. He doesn’t know how he got it and spends his time in a hospital in Saddam-Hussein’s old palace in Baghdad. When he wakes up he finds he has a purple heart. Also he finds he may have done something wrong and he hopes it isn’t true and when he gets called down to the lieutenant colonels office he may have to face his fears.

The setting of my novel is a solider in the military that gets in an accident and is in the hospital because of his injury. A RPG flew by him and blasted a wall and made him fly back and he has a really bad memory now and is having a hard time remembering little things like a rain coat. This is occurring over a week or so and is trying to recover fast to get back to his squad.

The main character in this novel is Matt Duffey he was in a accident and is trying to recover as fast as he can while struggling with memory problems. Also he is seeing this flash of a memory that is making him confused and worried of something he might have done. Justin, Wolf and Charlene are all members of his squad that Matt is in.

The setting is predominately in the Green Zone which is a sectioned off part of Baghdad, Iraq. The main character, Matt, woke up in an Army medical clinic there, and was told he got into a firefight and suffered from a traumatic brain injury, but can’t remember any of it. Matt can only remember bits and pieces of what happened before the incident. Matt appears to be a nice and sincere soldier that just wants to get back to his unit so he can help them with their patrols, and just wants to be with the boys. He is also one of the youngest in his group, and gets a lot of flak for this in letters he receives from his friend and squad mate Justin.

The setting of the novel Purple Heart is in the green zone of Iraq. It is during the Iraqi war which had begun in 2003 led by the United States of America. This setting will be important because of how it might affect the main characters. When and where they are might make something the situation harder for them. The main characters of Purple Heart are matt duffey the soldier that is injured, his best buddy Jacob, and Carolyn his girlfriend. Matt is described about how he reacts to certain situations sometimes he can’t remember things he will get mad. Matt describes his girlfriend Carolyn by her nice blonde hair and her legs are pale and that now she is all lovey and marriage type.

The setting for this book is Baghdad, Iraq. It’s warzone territory and 18 year old Matt Duffy was engaged in a firefight against enemy soldiers when an RPG exploded just feet away from him. He was knocked out cold and can only remember bits and pieces of the incident. He’s suffering from a brain injury and is struggling with memorization and his temper (common side effects of injuries of this type). The biggest problem with the blast is that he cannot remember what happened to a little Iraqi boy named Ali. He thinks he may have shot him, and it’s tearing him apart.

The setting of my book, Purple Heart, is so far, in a hospital in Baghdad, Iraq. An American soldier, named Matt Duffy, gets hit by an RPG during a firefight. He then wakes up in a hospital the next day, honored with a purple heart, but Matt has no memory of what happened. One of Matts friends that is in his squad, told him a few pieces of what happened, but he still can’t remember. Matt then has to go to a psychologist named Meaghan Finnerty, and she is trying to help Matt recover so then he can get back on the field.

The setting during the book up to where I am at has been in a hospital in Iraq. I believe that the setting takes place to set in how bad private matt Duffy’s traumatic brain disorder actually was. I also believe that the setting takes place here because as part of his rebilitation caused by TBD.
The main character of the story is about matt Duffy a 18 year old private which has suffered TBD or traumatic brain disorder. The injury caused matt to lose all of his memory except for a haunting image of a little Iraqi boy being shot. The book also has some sub characters like the rest of his squad which all are a bunch of cool, fun guys that look out for one another.

I am reading the book called Purple Heart, written by Patricia McCormick. The setting is in a green zone in Iraq. The main character of the story is a soldier in the military named Matt Duffy that gets in a accident and is in the hospital because he got a severe head injury. A RPG flew by him and hit the wall besides him ,which made him fly back and hit his head which caused him to have really bad memory now and is having a trouble remembering things. Especially on how he got that head injury. Right now he is resting and is trying to recover fast to get back to his combat squad, and go back out to the war.

The setting of the novel Purple Heart by Patricia McCormick is in present or slightly the past. it is in Iraq during the Iraq war which started on march 20 2003. The main character (Private Mathew Duffy) is in the former mansion of Saddam Hussein which the United States army has turned into a hospital. Private Duffy is in what is referred to as the "green zone". The main characters are Private Mathew Duffy, his best friend and squad mate Justin, Mathew's girlfriend back in America Caroline, his friend in the hospital Francis, and the two doctors caring for him Dr.kwong and Meaghan. The setting is important because Mathew is in the middle of a war in which the enemy is hidden and children could try to kill you second after they ask you for candy.

In purple heart the main character, Matt, is faced with a problem of trying to figure out what happened to him before he got hurt in action. He struggles with the conflicts of being confused, being hurt, & missing his squad. However his main problem is figuring out what happened in the alley where he was taking fire at. As bits and pieces of the story unfold he gets sent back with his squad to return to combat. It isn't until later that he figures out fully what all happened that day, however he remains haunted by the fact that he can never tell who the enemy is.

Private Matt Duffy has made some friends while in the hospital. Francis, a guy Matt knew little about. Matt has figured out why Francis has been placed in the hospital. Now after Francis told him Matt has been scared of him ever since. Megan Finnerty was Matt Duffy's doctor. Megan also seemed like Matt's guidance counselor. Matt has always been scared of the Military Police (MP). The MP's showed up in the morning directing him to the captains office which Matt did not know where he was going. He thought since the MP's were there, he was in some trouble. Everyone was afraid of the Military Police in the military said Matt.

Private Matt Duffy is facing a internal conflict in which he is sure his buddy Justin is the killer behind Ali's death. He knows Justin surely couldn't have killed him purposely, but it is starting to look that way. Everything has been different since he got back from the hospital. He is facing an external conflict as he gets a major attitude with his friends from the headaches. I'm predicting in the future Matt will find out that the killer is Justin, but I'm hoping not because I think Justin is a really nice guy and then Matt won’t have anyone to play Halo with, although Halo is a terrible game.

There are many internal and external conflicts in “Purple Heart”. One external conflict from this story could be how Matt Duffy is injured from being almost hit by an RPG and is trying to get better and get back out to his squad to fight with them. I predict that this struggle for Matt will be resolved by him finally getting better because the nurses at the infirmary will help him to get better. An internal conflict or struggle for Matt is that he is having trouble remembering things that happened right before he was almost hit with the RPG and is having short term memory loss. I think this struggle will be fixed by Matt trying hard and practicing remembering things so that he can get back out fighting with his squad.

So in my book there is an injured soldier named Matt Duffy. He was on the receiving end of an RPG and he can’t remember hardly anything that happened after the incident besides waking up in the hospital. His internal struggle is that he is having trouble wrapping his head around what happened to him. Also the fact of he still has no idea why he earned a purple heart. Another internal issue is there is a boy who would hang around matt and his squad during patrols and he keeps having this nightmare that Ali starts flying. An external problem is matt is hurting in his head and also his leg is a little limp.

Since Matt Duffy has been in the hospital life has been a little harder. When he got there they told that he had traumatic brain injury or TBI and he has not been the same since. TBI makes his life way harder. It mentally messes with him. He has a hard time remembering a lot of things and is always sleepy. In the book a lady name Meaghan Finnerty she is kind of like his doctor, well she reviews some memory things with and they both realize that he cannot even remember little words he has to describe what he is talking about instead of just saying the word. TBI also messes with him physically. He can barely walk, he is slowly walking. he takes a certain amount of steps a day. TBI has a really big impact on his life.

His internal struggle is how he has no idea how or what has happened to him, he just woke up in a random hospital. He recieves a purple heart which is an award he recieved by doing something, but he has no idea what that is. Matt duffy throughout what iv read really struggles with knowing weather all his men are ok, from the rpg that put him in the hospital. He keeps trying to remeber simple everyday thing and he cant, so he really struggles with that. An external struggle matt has is that his head is constantly killing him, and doesnt have full strength in one of his legs. Matt can barely walk becasue of how severe his tramatic brain injury is.

Matt's brain injury is a problem for him, he was diagnosed with TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) which has various side effects including loss of memory and migraines. Matt was asked several questions about what happened "but he didn't remember anything about the attack." (55) Not knowing what happened to him is a problem because he doesn't know who else was involved, know if anyone else was hurt, or if he did anything wrong. The head injury as a whole is also a problem for Matt because it is preventing him from going back into combat. Matt is struggling internally because whenever he gets a question wrong or can't remember something he gets mad at himself and blames himself for the incident that he is unsure of.

The external conflict is that Private Matt Duffy is sent back to his unit after he came out of the hospital with TBI(traumatic brain injury). Then he gets back to his unit he hasn’t seen in a while and he’s happy until he gets treated differently by his squad. They start to ignore him and his friend Justin doesn’t want to hang out with him anymore and Matt doesn’t like that. He tries all he can do to get attention and he tries to get on their good side but it doesn’t succeed mostly. Anyway it was a really good book

Matt Duffy is suffering from a brain injury from an explosion during incident during war. He was rushed to the hospital in the green zone, and there he received treatment during his stay. Matt couldn't remember as much stuff as he used to. He kept having a dream and constant flash backs about a kid that gets shot, lifted off his feet, and disappeared in to the sky. He remembers seeing a dog before the shot was fired in to the boy. The worst of all Matt is haunted by the thought of him doing but not remembering that he did it.

An internal conflict in the story would be that of the main character, Matt Duffy, and his struggle to remember the event that caused him to be hospitalized. In the beginning he can only remember snapshots of what happened in the firefight. This struggle is very evident throughout the story, and he begins to talk to the councilor Meghan Finnerty and begins to tell her what he can remember. Eventually he regains some more memories of the firefight, and begins to think that he killed a little boy that he had befriended earlier in the deployment. During this time he also begins to pray more and confide in God a little more as a way to help ease the memories.

An internal conflict in this book is Matt having brain damage. Matt has a time remembering simple things in life such as a rain coat or what a ballroom is. It is very hard sometimes for Matt to speak because of what he has. Also this book has an external conflict with Matt having to try and hide that he has a memory of a child named Ali that gets shot but he doesn't know who shot him and in the military if an civilian is shot you go to jail for 20 or more years. The head of the military eventually wants to talk to Matt about what happens.

  44. In Purple Heart, Private matt Duffy has to deal with one of the most frustrating and difficult conflicts. The main conflict is of matt having severe head trauma, which he got after he was on the business end of an RPG. The way that this brings conflict to the plot is that matt only has one memory to start off with which haunts him of a little Iraqi boy being shot down an alley. I think that this conflict helps the story because it continues to make me want to read more and more to see what and how he regains his loss of memory.

He is now suffering from a internal struggle because he has no idea what has happened to him, or how he got his head injury he just woke up in a random hospital. Later on after some time to rest he received a purple heart which is an award for doing something, but he has no idea what that is. Another internal issue is there is a boy named Ali who would hang around matt and his squad during patrols and he keeps having this nightmare that Ali starts flying, during the time the RPG hits the wall.

One of the many conflicts, both internal and external, in this book is the internal conflict between private Matt Duffy and the thought that he killed Ali and the guilt that comes with it. He thinks he killed a child, a friend no less, and he is torn apart by it. He is also fighting his TBI. He’s had memory problems since the start of the book. Not to mention his leg dragging behind him wherever he goes. And to make matters worse he still has flashbacks to the ally where he was nearly killed with an RPG and where he believes he killed his friend Ali. To top it all off he is afraid he might not be able to pull the trigger if he has to.

In the book Purple Heart, the main character Matt faces both internal and external conflict. The external conflict is that he is at war and fighting for his country, but while in a firefight he is hit with an RPG and is put in the hospital with a terrible head injury. He faces the internal conflict of trying to act better for the doctor so he can get back to his squad. With his head injury he can’t help but to forget things so it is hard to hide. Eventually he proves to one of the doctors that he is ready to be put back with his squad, but when he is told he can go back, he wonders if he is really ready to pull the trigger if he has to.

The internal conflict is when the character Matt Duffy can’t remember anything and form his previous brain injury. He kept having flashbacks and is trying to remember everything for because his buddy told him that he was going to get called and interviewed to know why he got a purple heart. They also told him that if he gets better he will be returning to his squad and will be back in war. He is also trying to do his best remembering what happened and what the boy represents in his flashback. He has little time till they interview him.
